about

This is the one song on the album that my son kept on singing-- "Giving up that DNA... Giving up that DNA" I recorded him one day as we were driving in the car. While other little kids his age were dancing and dapping, Leroi DYNOMITE always wanted to grab that microphone.

The spark for the song came when I read about how law enforcement was using commercial DNA websites to help catch suspects and criminals. It made me think about the ways in which we willingly give our most personal information (DNA is information after all) to corporations as if they were providing services to us for our own well-being. And many of us PAY these companies to take our most precious information! "Giving up that DNA... Giving up that DNA"

Blessed to have Detroit funk songstress Coko Buttafli lace the song with her vocals. Props to engineer Bryce Detroit for coaxing and mixing the singing out of me. Producer Info56 created a gem that keeps booties bopping and our chromosomes vibrating.

The end of the song muses on our African ancestry. Many African-Americans think that something has been irreperably and eternally damaged when we were taken from the continent and subjected to the traumas of slavery. Others intentionally are seeking African culture/ connection and bringing that practice into the 21st century. I think all can agree that Africa is still-- always and forever-- in our "DNA."

lyrics

We giving DNA to dot-com Ancestry
Then they sell it to I.C.E. and the P.D.
Keep yo genes Keep yo energy
Keep yo energy Fuck they chemistry

Ughh
What a muthafucka want want
Toby turn to Kunte Kinte when the blunt's out
Kendrick turn King Kunta when the funk's out
The simple life
Bag of blaze and a junk truck
Distorted vision turnin women into Hottentots
It's sacreligious call World Star "hiphop"
We enter nets (internets) like Tron in reclining car
We in a mine stuck, they lied where the diamonds are
Niggas!
We just trying to find family.
We just a tribe that can't vibe organically
From the master's yard, MasterCard
Negros panicking
Then you take your melanin
and mail it into Ancestry!
