about

Bryce Detroit calls this track a "Black James Bond" story. I wanted to dive into revolutionary story telling with this one. The song centers around the La Shish restaurant, which closed in metro-Detroit as the owners were accused of using their charity donations as a cover-up for supporting "terrorist organizations." Verse 1 is definitively inspired by the OG Suheir Hammad. If I do a remix of this song, I would like to include some of her poetry. This song is an activity of Black-Brown unity as both our communities face profiling, counterintelligence tactics, infiltration and surveillance in the post-9-11 environment. Detroit (Global Black Metropolis) borders Dearborn (largest Arab population center outside the middle east). There is great work to do for us to understand our struggles not as isolated fights but as part of a worldwide banging on this system. Verse three launches with the recognition that many of our conscious kin call themselves "Asiatic." This verse moves us towards worldwide family relationships. Most La Shish restaurants changed their names to something else. I'm glad a few still stand.

lyrics

verse 1:
see my people up in Dearborn
we ride in Southwestern
she prayed to the East like Stuyvesant Bedford
I began, let's work. she just raised a finger

there's ears in the room, my voice stayed and lingered
she pointed to the window, sent me a mental vision
I saw my confinement like I'm sitting in a prison
whats the dang sentence, I couldn't say a sentence
we talked about freedom other shit I can't mention
she said what's my culture, I replied Detroiter
my brother, you're more ancient, ain't no body ever told ya?
your father was a soldier with post traumatic aura
he learned it from his pops, and his dad that's before him
a pillar of salt in a tragic Gommorrah
I looked at this woman like damn thats the story! (uh)
she read my life like professor reads book
then they passed the fresh salad and a large shish tawook

When I ate at La Shish
they said I'm unAmerican
they closed down La Shish
and called me a terrorist

verse 2:
Had to meet my mens up in Hamtramck
A thousand brown brothers down to dismantle capit-alism
toke niggas down to legalize ganga
the cops sent a fake ass rasta imposter
He asked for pork spare ribs and alfredo pasta
and said "what's up Irie" and looked like he's lost
I asked who's your boss? is there a mic in your locks?
He said you're too late-- theres a mic in your thoughts
I said fuck the police I did it more subliminally
pawn moves limitedly see my sworn enemy
this mutherfuckers think he's in a Bourne Supremacy
this ain't no Matt Damon you Will Smith wanna be
He said we got you scoped out, files right in front of me
you're a rabble rouser, damn croud arouser
picket power protest, we got you by the gonads (Oh man!!!)

When I ate at La Shish
they said I'm unAmerican
they closed down La Shish
and called me a terrorist

Verse 3:
the Asiatic fanatic with planetary grammatics
the way we master schematics like military attacking.
Peace keeper the peace maker the tour guide:
the beat taker to new places.
who am i?
who you work for? Cuba, Hezballah?
I'm working for the day we get community power
in'shAllah
His orders came from the mighty dollar
with fourteen generals, a handful of scholars
the rest were white collars, who passed down orders
i caught the mu'fuckers with their masks down -sorta
like halloween. In other words children are following
looking for treats, walking streets with their hands out
teenage sweet young things with their ass out
men holler "tricks" some get scholarships
cellular signals beamed down from mother ships
ain't finta blast myself the way my brother did

So if you see my brains on the upstairs rug
know damn well it was a government slug
